His paws took him to the place where they had buried Emma and he sat down and bowed his head. For a while he sat there in silence, feeling immense grief build up inside him. Water was everywhere, stretching off into the distance as far as the eye could see. It had been a flood, a flood caused by a river overfilled by rain. In the wide expanse, there were a few uprooted trees that hadn’t been able to withstand to sheer power of fast-flowing water. Large waves still churned, made stronger by the wind.
Suddenly, a cat burst its way above the water, coughing and spluttering. Its brown fur was drenched and the current tugged at it, threatening to pull the cat back under, but she would not give up.
“Help!” She called out. “Please help me!” She broke off to cough and then called out again. “Please…!” Exhaustion swept over her and she began to sink back under the cold water. Then she saw a branch that had been torn off a tree floating on the water. With the last of her strength, she swam over to it and clung to it with her front legs.
